Baoule mask (N° 22459)

Ex-french african art collection.
African mask , intended for entertainment ceremonies and therefore, according to the Baule tradition, could be seen by women. The headdress, in the form of a mitre, has braided shells. The traditional scarifications called "ngole" form a slight relief on the face. Smooth polychrome patina. These portrait masks of the Baule, ndoma, which are part of one of the oldest Baule artistic traditions and frequently represent an idealized character, have the particularity of appearing at the end of entertainment dance ceremonies. Depending on the region, these masks are called bedwo, ngblo, mblo, adjussu, etc. .... Each of these masks is distinguished by the hairstyles, the location and choice of scarification, etc... Also called Gbagba, they personify graceful young girls or men whose valour or qualities of integrity are renowned. The new generations are gradually replacing these Mblo dances called Gbagba in some villages, while retaining most of the old conventions, by the Kpan Kpan dance, whose masks raise societal problems or refer to political projects.
