Chokwe Mask (N° 24340)

The headdress of this African mask is reminiscent of the traditional hairstyle of Chokwe women who coated it with red clay. The facial features are finely chiseled, enhanced with traditional scarified motifs. Smooth nuanced brown patina.
African Chokwe pwo masks, female masks among the many akishi or "akixi" (sing: mukishi, indicating power) masks of art tribal Chokwe were however worn by high ranking men. Joined to their male counterparts, cihongo recognizable by their large headdress in the shape of a plate, the pwo must bring fertility and prosperity to the community. Always worn by initiates of higher rank, these female masks were often decked out with buttons and accessories of European origin.
