Dan mask (N° 22824) Deposit sale

Among the Dan, spirits would manifest through dreams in order to be honoured. They then indicate the details of the masks to be made. The African Dan masks, of various craftsmanship, generally occur during very theatrical entertainment parties where women play a leading role. Each of the masks has a name related to its function. The mask kagle , kaoglé , with triangular reliefs, was exhibited in joyful evolutions during which the dancer threw sticks at the public. The Dan also carve, always according to the indications of the diviner, miniature masks on the model of the large masks. They are worn as amulets by children. The dark, lustrous patina of African Dan masks was obtained by immersion in mud baths. Interesting patina of use, localized grainy residual encrustations, small accidents and cracks.
