Nyanga mask (N° 22323) Deposit sale

Protruding eyelids lodged under a heart-shaped eyebrow arch, a straight nose, an open mouth in a prognathic chin, large cupules representing the ears. This African mask has analogies with those of the Lega, neighbors of the Nyanga.
Clear golden patina, residual kaolin pigments. Raffia beard.
Height on base: 46 cm.

Established in the Kivu forest in the DRC, the Nyanga are from Uganda, of Bahunde stock. The Hunde migration mixed them with the Lega living in the region. A patrilineal society, they rub shoulders with the Kumu and the Pere and live from hunting and agriculture. Their pottery and the basketry produced by the women are renowned. Many cults structure their religious life: that associated with the god of fire, the aquatic serpent, and the spirits of nature. Circumcision and initiation ceremonies are accompanied by "mumbira" musical instruments.
