Vuvi mask (N° 22864)

Related to the African Okuyi masks of the Punu ethnic groups of the Shira tribes, the African masks produced by the peripheral groups, Vuvi, Galoa and Mitsogho, are also coated with white pigments for apotropaic purposes. The oblique visor headdress, reminiscent of a capillary fashion in the Shira group, constituted the frontal part of a coffered hairstyle. Devoid of scarifications, this African mask has narrow protruding eyelids, a triangular nose and a diamond-shaped mouth that seems to whistle. Break. Grainy powdery patina.

The Mitsogho ethnic group, Sogho, is established in a forest region on the right bank of the Ngoumé River. The Bwiti society, or Bweté, which has a system of reliquaries comparable to that of the Fang and the Kota, formed the cohesion of the Mitsogho families. Their masks were worn at night by initiates under the influence of a hallucinogenic plant iboga, on the occasion of funerals, then stored in the house of male initiation ebanza. The Vuvi produced relatively comparable masks, influenced by the proximity of the Mitsogho.
