Yoruba Mask (N° 24934)

Topped with subjects associated with the orisa of the Yoruba pantheon, this Yoruba mask from Nigeria, whose base is called ikoko, highlights the prosperity of the community. Among the Ekiti of the northeastern part of the Yoruba region, these helmet masks come out every two years, after being painted by their bearers. Despite the weight of the masks, the dancers perform spectacular acrobatic demonstrations. These ceremonies are also believed to increase fertility. Polychrome matt patina, grainy.
The Yoruba, more than 20 million, occupy southwestern Nigeria and the central and southeastern region of Benin under the name of Nago. They are patrilineal, practice excision and circumcision. The kingdoms of Oyo and Ijebu arose following the disappearance of the Ifé civilization and are still the basis of the political structure of the Yoruba . The Oyo created two cults centered on the still active Egungun and Sango societies, which worshiped a pantheon of gods, the Orisa< /i> , through ceremonies using masks, statuettes, scepters and divination supports. The slave trade helped spread Yoruba beliefs across continents.
