Ngombe Mask (N° 21307) Deposit sale

This ancient African mask shares with the Ngbaka and Ngbandi sculptures a ridged nose. Parallel striations run around the face, while small ears are inscribed high up. Metal tabs form the teeth. Two-tone satin patina. In northwestern Zaire, south of the Ubangi River, on the banks of the Lualaba, live the 120000 Ngombe Bantu-speaking people, led by a chief and a warrior society Elombe . Their neighbors are the Ngbandi and Ngbaka whose statuary has influenced their tribal sculpture, and various banda groups. Their geometric-looking masks are used during the rites of the mani society. In addition, they produce hunting fetishes with protective purposes, and prestige objects decorated with tapestry nails.
