Pende Mbuya Mask (N° 10229)

Ex collection Of Belgian African art.

The African Mbuya masks are worn by young men during the initiation and circumcision rites that make up the Mukanda. The headdress here is decorated with cured hair. The facial features are droopy and quite angular.
A thick raffia beard accompanies the room.

The Pende is generally distinguished from the East (Kasai) or the West (Kwilu). There is a wide variety of Pende statues and masks (at least sixty) often anthropomorphic but sometimes also zoomorphic.
