Yaure Mask (N° 24773)

Reflecting the refinement of traditional sculpture from the Ivory Coast, this mask of modest size, offering regular features strangely surmounted by loom pulleys, is embellished with numerous diamond patterns.
Heterogeneous speckled patina, ocher residues.
The Yaouré are a subgroup of the Akan people present in Côte d'Ivoire and Ghana. Geographically close to the Baoulé and the Gouros, the art of the Yaouré was influenced by these neighboring ethnic groups, and vice versa. The masks of African art Yaouré , or Yauré , of which the Baoulé have almost analogous models, are divided into two groups which are difficult to differentiate, the je , sometimes with the addition of colored pigments, and the lo, generally with a dark patina, which occur during funeral ceremonies or any other rite in order to reconcile the favors of the "Yu" spirits. The masked dancers Yoouré, Yahouré, were not to be seen by women, it was also forbidden to photograph them
