This double-axe scepter Osé Sango carried with the left hand during the ritual dances represents a follower wearing the double axe representing the stone axes that the god would throw on earth during the storms. These statues represent through their headdress, the god of thunder and youth Shango, or Sango. The latter would be the mythical ancestor of the kings of Oyo. He was also the protector of twins, whose occurrence was very common in the region. It is a divinity feared for its unpredictability, and revered because it would bring beneficial rains to the crops. It is also to her that the fertility of women is attributed. Shelled polychrome patina. Height on base: 73 cm.
