Nsapo fetish (N° 23146)

Songye type fetish whose original character is born from the creativity of nsapo sculptors. The Nsapo, a Songye subgroup who settled in Lulua territory following wars with the Arabs, were subject to various influences. Prestigious works have been made by the "Master of Beneki".
Anthropomorphic figure carved in dense wood, and whose head bears linear parallel scarifications, horizontal eyelids and a narrow pouting mouth. Between the horns at the top a cupule allowed the insertion of a horn or fetish materials. Statuettes and miniature masks, connected by a cord, make up a belt-talisman. Pompoms and horns, feathers and twigs complete the set.
Light brown satin patina. Minimal erosions and cracks.
