Ex-collection African art from Monaco. This Kusu fetish with scowling features responding to the classic canons of the ethnic group, is endowed with arms in a circular arc whose hands join the abdomen. At the top of the skull is perched the magic charge indispensable to the use of the fetish. Interesting patina. The Kusu, who live on the left bank of the Lualaba, have borrowed the artistic traditions of the Luba and the Hemba and have a caste system similar to that of the Luba. The Hemba, on the other hand, settled in southeastern Zaire, on the right bank of the Lualaba. Formerly under the domination of the Luba, these farmers and hunters practice ancestor worship by means of effigies long attributed to the Luba. The singiti statues were kept by the fumu mwalo and honored during ceremonies in which sacrifices were offered to them. In addition to the authority of the hereditary chiefs, secret societies, both male, such as the bukazanzi, and female, the bukibilo, played an important role within the clan. The figures of individual protection such as our example, used by the Hemba and the Kusu, were inspired by Songye fetishes.
