Baga face mask (N° 19750)

Better known for their large shoulder masks, the Baga also made use of facial sculptures, such as this African mask with a bushy nose that refers to the beak of the hornbill. It offers various motifs, in the form of checkerboards and dotted lines, and incised hair divided by a double crest. The shoulder mask version, a true national symbol, can reach up to 50 kg in its largest versions. Its real name Demba / D'mba (or Nimba in the Baga language), it represents the nurturing woman, but also the fertility of the hornbill thanks to its beak-shaped nose. Supposed to increase harvests, to bring about pregnancies, the mask is exhibited during various ceremonies, festivals and funerals.
Satin patina. Height on base: 50 cm.
