This large African Baule mask, decorated with decorative motifs, features a sheep. Polychrome lacquered patina. The twisted sculpted horns evoke aggressiveness and destructive power. Long ears surround the animal's head, highlighting the relief of the muzzle. A sacrificial victim for offerings and a metaphor for pugnacity, the ram's mask is used in ceremonies associated with the male initiation society of the Poro. According to Baule mythology, a royal ancestor had to sacrifice his son to cross a river. This event is at the origin of the name Baoulé, "the son is dead". They represent most of the population of Côte d'Ivoire. African Baoulé artists have produced very elegant and diversified works of art, including many masks.
