Baule monkey mask (N° 20127)

Often linked to the Mbra cult of divination and possession, the Baule figures of cynocephalus belong to the group of "beings-force" or amwin , intermediaries between God and men and given to the Baule by their Creator.
It would also be a minor deity of the name of aboya associated with the Mbra. cult, and sometimes still a figure associated with the mbotumbo ("baboon") cult of annual agrarian rites. Eroded surface encrusted with kaolin, velvety texture.
With a propitiatory purpose, these sculptures were to constitute the dwelling place of the spirits to which offerings were presented and on which libations were made. Real monkey skulls often formed the head of the character. The sculptures were kept in the villages, but the ritual practices took place in the bush, and sometimes in the center of the dance circle. Some were never to be seen by women, as were some masks. Crusty sacrificial patina, fragments of down, drips.
