Boa Bavobongo Mask (N° 18500)

A variant of the mask bavobongo, this mask was supposed to make it invulnerable. His appearance wanted to terrify the enemy. This mask of African art kpongadomba des Boa was commissioned by chief kumu who offered it to the most valiant warrior. It was then kept in his wife's hut. Equipped with oversized ears, perforated as were once the pavilions of the ears of the Eastern Boa, the bavobongo, and a mouth lined with teeth depicted by hatches on this copy, it gave an impressive appearance to its wearer, accentuated by the contrast of colors. The mass of the forehead extended by the nose confers here all the strength of the sculpture. Mate patina with a polychrome dotillage.
Proches of the Mangbetu and Zande, the Boa live in the savannah in the north of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Some Boas have reportedly used these masks for educational purposes with children, since the pacification of the Uele region.
