The side rings of this African mask, named kpongadomba or "Pongdudu", feature perforated ears as the ear flaps of the Eastern Boa once were. This mask supposed to make invulnerable was intended to terrify the enemy. It was commanded by the chief kumu who offered it to the most valiant warrior. It was then kept in his wife's hut.
The "bavobongo" which gave an impressive appearance to its wearer is accentuated by the contrast of colors.
Peeling velvety patina.
Close to the Mangbetu and the Zande, the Boa inhabit the savannah in the north of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Some Boa would have used these masks for educational purposes with children, since the pacification of the Uele region.
