Boulou animal mask (N° 18887)

Equipped with a mobile jaw, this mask evokes the skull of a great ape. The features are underlined with upholstery nails, contrasting with the crusty blackish patina. Strands of wool represent a hair.
Located in the border zone between Cameroon and Gabon, the Boulou are part of the Fang group. Like the Fang of South Cameroon famous for their large white masks, the Boulou also practiced the Ngil ritual to fight against witchcraft and poisoning. Ngi is the gorilla, a fearsome animal with which the applicant identifies after acceptance into the secret society.
