Douala Mask (N° 16481)

Flat structure, formed of a rectangular volume evoking a narrow face that a middle ridge divides vertically, flanked by two fins indicating ears, and surmounted by horns joining in an arc. The surface offers juxtaposed geometric combinations painted in contrasting colors. The mask ends in its lower part with a diamond metal blade in the tongue.
Sculpted by the sculptors of Douala in the Bay of Cameroon, this type of zoomorphic mask were produced for the initiates of the society ekongolo to honor the ancestors at the occasion of ritual ceremonies, and wore like a helmet. The Douala, living at the mouth of the river Wuri , organized regattas where one could admire, on the bows of the canoes, carved works, painted in bright colors, depicting reptiles and animals.
