Go Gé Dan Mask (N° 16379)

The large braided hairstyle topped this mask allows to attribute it to the type of masks go ge . Renowned in African art, the Yacouba , also known as Dan , are known for their traditional masks and dances, sacred or profane. Royal masks, the goge, used only on special occasions, are adorned with an imposing hairstyle braided with vegetable fibers, sometimes enhanced with cauris, and in which talismans were mixed. On this copy the lower lip is enhanced with red textile. Smooth black brown skate.
In society, mask wearers are high members of the social hierarchy. Masks are involved in the dispute resolution process when the village chief has failed to resolve a problem. In general, dan masks also have the peculiarity of being not representations of bush spirits but of being in fact the embodiment of them. Most were kept outside the villages in specific shelters within the sacred forest or in the chief's room.
