Guéré mask (N° 21499)

Guéré masks are reputed to be complex pieces in terms of both form and materials. If one can observe certain similarities with the Dan masks, such as the rounded forehead, the nose and the general shape of the face, the eyes are globular and protruding here. On this piece, a large mouth is visible. The forehead is shaped like a visor. On either side of the nose, horned elements are protruding.
The Guéré are an ethnic group from a forest region along the western border of Côte d'Ivoire. They are part of a larger tribe called Wé that also includes the Wobé ethnic group with whom the Guéré share many customs and beliefs.
