French collection of African art.
In the southwest Igbo region, this mask is associated with the worship of the Owu water spirits. The white masks represent a benevolent and feminine spirit, while the Okoroshi ojo masks form its masculine counterpart, powerful and threatening. Old restoration, missing and abrasions.
Velvety matte patina.
The Igbo are settled in the southern Niger Delta region of Nigeria. The Igbo religion includes on the one hand the god Chuku, supreme creator, and on the other hand the spirit of the earth Ala. Their masks come out for funerals, initiation ceremonies for young boys, and now during secular celebrations.
