French collection of African art Two faces with the same hooked nose and a toothed grin, but with different facial motifs, adorn this Igbo, Ibo crest mask. This dense wooden crest participated in dry season funeral ceremonies as well as festivities in the Cross River region.

br>The Igbo worship a considerable number of deities known as alusi, or agbara, considered to be the descendants of Chuku, or Chukwu, and as such constitute intermediaries to whom sacrifices such as kola nuts, money, kaolin, are granted in order to enjoy their favors. Among the abundant variety of Igbo masks, okoroshi masks, linked to the feminine and masculine spirits of the waters, occur during the yam season but must also increase fertility.
