Large Nyanga mask (N° 20513)
With prominent eyes within whitened globes, a triangular nose and a protruding jaw, this mask is somewhat reminiscent of the Lega, neighbors of the Nyanga. The cheeks bear curvilinear scarifications.
Height on base: 45 cm.
Established in the Kivu forest in the D.R.C., the Nyanga are originally from Uganda, of Bahunde stock. Hunde migration has mixed them with the Lega living in the region. A patrilineal society, they live alongside the Kumu and Pere and live by hunting and farming. Their pottery and basketry produced by the women are renowned.
Many cults structure their religious life: those associated with the god of fire, the aquatic serpent, and the spirits of nature. The ceremonies of circumcision and initiation are accompanied by musical instruments "mumbira" .
