Lelna, Zuru mask (N° 21443)

Belgian African art collection.
African mask with a prominent forehead and zoomorphic tubular machoîre, the end of which bears a fine toothed mouth. The head sports a diadem of cowrie shells, inlaid in a star shape on the forehead and representing a traditional mark, and extending from a band of white kaolin on the nasal bridge.
The crusty patina is partially flaked.

Mask probably used by the M'gilo secret society that instructs youth in terms of discipline among the Lelna, Lela,( or Dakarkari) of Kebbi state in northwestern Nigeria. The Lelna refer to a group of individuals of diverse, non-Muslim backgrounds. Their totem animal is the crocodile, which is sacred and to which they occasionally make offerings. These crocodiles are also the subject of an annual festival.
