Ex. French collection of African art. This African mask of the Lula type offers elements reminiscent of the traditional sculpture of the Lula's close neighbors: Nkanu, Holo, Zombo, and Yaka. Like Tous, they use colored pigments. The trance-like gaze and the jowls in high relief surmount an element representing the tongue. The latter rests on a flat part that goes around the face to the visor at the top. Like the Kakungu among the Suku, this mask would be worn to protect the initiates from witchcraft. Polychrome matte patina. Abrasions. This ethnic group close to the Yaka is settled along the Nséki River in the southwest of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Lula live in small, autonomous hunting and fishing villages. We notice on their sculptures scarifications similar to those of the Teke, while the headdresses and the general morphology of the objects are similar to the art of the Yaka.
