Mask Dan Déanglé (N° 18800)

A careful tight braiding, made of vegetal fibers, forms the headdress of this African Dan mask. Thin notches allow the vision of the dancer, and a diamond-shaped mouth forms one of the distinctive elements of this Dan mask. Dark glossy patina.
Dan masks, of various designs, are usually performed at highly theatrical entertainment parties where women play a prominent role. The so-called "mocking" mask called Déanglé defines an ideal of beauty and benevolence because it is sculpted in honor of the young girls of the village or famous men. Also used during the rites of circumcision, they appear in company of the singing masks gle sö and the large masks go ge related to the society go, which exercises justice and maintains peace.
