Mumuye Mask (N° 12674)

The Mumuye in African art.
South of the Benoué River, in an area of difficult access that isolated them until 1950, are established the Mumuye, which are organized into family groups named dola . Their statues iagalagana were stored in a box, tsafi, reserved for this purpose, while another box, java , housed an individual with magical powers and surrounding himself with ritual objects related to his function and prestige . This type of mask is found in the northwest region of the benue middle, from Kona Jukun, to the Mumuye and up to the Wurkun populations. The statuary emanating from this area is distinguished by a relative lack of ornamentation and a clean stylization. The 100,000 Adamawa speakers form a group called Mumuye and are grouped into villages, dola, divided into two groups: those of fire (tjokwa) relating to blood and red color, guardians of the cult vabong, among which are elected leaders ,and those of water, (tjozoza), related to humidity and white color. It is among these that the priests of the rain are chosen, initiated from the worship vadosong . Occasionally occurring in pairs, this mask could be accompanied by a horizontal mask during pre-war rituals. Its appearance is today linked to apotropaic ceremonies and call to rain. Surmounted by a head with a head-helmet with side panels, this so-called shoulder mask has a base consisting of two flat surfaces0. One of them has an opening for the wearer's vision. Eroded wood has desication cracks and remnants of xylophageal attacks.
