In the northwest of Zaire, south of the Ubangi, on the banks of the Lualaba, live the 120000 Ngombe of Bantu language, led by a chief and a warrior society Elombe . Their neighbors are the Ngbandi and the Ngbaka whose statuary has influenced their tribal sculpture, and various banda groups. Their sometimes geometric-looking masks are used during the rites of the mani society. In addition, they produce hunting fetishes with protective purposes, and prestige objects adorned with tapestry nails.
