Shi Mask (N° 25511)

A projecting mouth here extends the oval of the face, giving this mask a great presence. The hatching running along the eyebrow arch enhances the protruding, stretched eyelids. The straight nose is marked with linear scarifications, repeated obliquely on the cheeks. Thick dark patina mixed with white, partially flaked. Height on base: 49 cm.
Installed on the shores and islands of Lake Kivu, the Bashi, Omushi, or even Banyabungu, form a western Bantu group, with which the Lega came to mix, which pastoral populations from Rwanda then joined. They live mainly from agriculture and livestock breeding. Cults of different origins are the basis of their religion. They venerate the souls of the deceased: family ancestors, heroes, leaders. Although groups from this region hardly produced sculpture, the Shi carved masks, and some objects associated with legas rites. They are, however, renowned for their very diverse and beautifully crafted utility containers.
According to M.L. Félix: “100 People of Zaire and their sculpture”.
