Yohoure/Baoule Mask (N° 17592)

Glossy mahogany brown skate for this African mask sculpted by artisans of the Yohouré ethnic group. Faces are reproduced in miniature between the braided shells depicted on this mask of the lo . The chiseled hair of decorative patterns is an indicator of wealth. The delicate patterned brass-encrusted face and polished surface with bright reflections reveal the talent of African tribal art sculptors in Côte d'Ivoire.
The Yaouré are a subgroup of the Akan people present in Côte d'Ivoire and Ghana. Geographically close to the Baoulé and Gouros , the art yaouré was marked by the influence of these ethnic groups through attention to detail and aesthetics. African art masks Yaouré, or Yauré, whose Baoulé or Baule have similar models, are divided into two groups that are difficult to differentiate, the je , sometimes with the addition of colored pigments, and the lo, usually with a dark patina, who intervene during funeral ceremonies or any other rite in order to reconcile the favors of the spirits.
