The African masks of the Yombe were used by the diviner nganga diphoba and by members of secret societies. Surmounted by a two-headed dog symbolizing divination, this mask with naturalistic features bears an excrescence at the top that is visually balanced by a pointed chin. Glazed gaze also alludes to clairvoyant abilities. Abraded matte patina. A clan of the Kongo group, the Yombe are established on the west coast of Africa, in the south-west of the Republic of Congo and in Angola. Their statuary includes remarkable maternities. The Solongo cultures of Angola and Yombé were largely influenced by the Kongo kingdom from which they borrowed naturalistic statuary and religious rites, in particular by means of sculpted fetishes. The naturalistic art of the Bayombe, in addition to masks and nkisi fetishes, includes prestigious sculptures and objects associated with the Lemba cult, glorifying harmony and couple life.
