Female figure Boa (N° 18867)

Statuette endowed with a stylized face softened by a tiara cap, and ears reminiscent of those of the bavobongo mask. The superimposed spherical volumes, indicating the legs, form here a powerful contrast with the angular projections of the head and the bust on which come to rest the hands of the character. Mutilations and cracks. Shaded lustrous patina.
Close to the Mangbetu and Zande, the Boa inhabit the savannah in the north of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Their anthropomorphic figures were undoubtedly used in rituals to fight against the witchcraft of the ndoki . They are known for their masks with oversized ears, perforated like the ear pavilions of the Eastern Boa, the " bavobongo ". It conferred an impressive aspect to its wearer, accentuated by the contrast of colors. The mask of African art kpongadomba of the Boa was ordered by the chief kumu who offered it to the most valiant warrior. It was then kept in his wife's hut. Some Boa are said to have used the masks for educational purposes with children since the pacification of the Uele region.
