African art Songye This type of African sculpture would be endowed, for the Songye and related peoples, with powerful magical and apotropaic powers. These objects come in different forms, here a finely sculpted fetish statuette, perched on three small gourds. This sculpture was used as part of protective rites. It was customary, during rituals, to fill the calabash with magical ingredients in order to reinforce its power. The ingredients used produced a sound when the object was shaken, which was only sealed at the end of the ceremony.
