Ceremonial polearm (iron) made by the Nsapo, skilled blacksmiths. Warriors and conquerors, the Songye have fashioned some of the most beautiful weapons in Africa: their axes in particular have blades attached to the handle by elements producing an elegant openwork effect, or by decorative sculptures reminiscent of masks. This example is distinguished by its twisted spacers. Height on base: 46 cm.
The Nsapo, Zappo Zap, or Bena Sapo, a Songye subgroup that settled in the Lulua territory following wars with the Arabs, have been subject to various influences. Their ceremonial weapons were used to affirm the prestige of their leaders.
