The Mossi are a people native to Burkina Faso as well as to the regions bordering the surrounding countries. More than five million people consider themselves Mossi, belonging to this ethnic community being based on the practice of the Moré language and on the practice of a number of traditions.
They constituted, in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, large kingdoms, the two main ones of which (Yatenga and Ouagadougou) remained independent until European penetration and were only subdued with difficulty by the French colonizers.
Animists, the Mossi worship a creator god named Wendé . Each individual is said to be endowed with a soul, sigha , linked to a totemic animal.
The Mossi provided an important workforce to the Ivory Coast and Ghana. Even today a strong Mossi community resides in Côte d'Ivoire.
They speak Moré, a Voltaic language.
