Mangbetu statue (N° 23370)

Sporting an uncommon flat headdress associated with Mangbetu aristocrats, this ancestor effigy offers carefully modeled features, giving great expressiveness to the face. She is devoid of body paintings and scarifications, the whole highlighting the genitals, a symbol of lineage. Smooth orange patina, erosions, lack.
The ancients call these figures of ancestors stored out of sight and comparable to those belonging to their secret society nebeli beli.
Among the Mangbetu from an early age, children suffered compression of the cranial box held tight by raffia ties. Later, young women "knit" their hair on wicker strands and apply a headband to the forehead in order to bring out the hair and constitute this particular headdress which accentuates the elongation of the head.
