Figure of ancestor Kusu (N° 17156)

The Kusu established on the left bank of the Lualaba, have borrowed the artistic traditions of Luba and Hemba, including the cult of ancestors and mythical heroes, and possess a caste system similar to that of Luba .  In this region, between the Bembe, Boyo, Hemba, Songye and Tetela, ritual objects were subjected to exchanges and stylistic influences. The narrowness of the bust is mainly noted on the figures of ancestors to free the space of the arms among the major characteristics. The primordial ancestor, named Soba , would be incarnated in the sculpted figures of the Kusu. Their initiation society, the bagabo , also uses protective fetishes against witchcraft.
The character's braided hair, worn low on the nape of the neck, is picked up in a bun. The triangular face is adorned with a short beard. The posture highlights the abdomen, on which the protruding umbilical refers to parentage. Oily, glossy patina. Beige ochre residual inlays.
