Zimba Statue (N° 18855)

This figure inspired by the Luba and Lega traditions has facial features reminiscent of Lega masks. In a bent position, resting on large feet with hands resting on her knees, she wears bleached globes framed by large circular ears and a mouth revealing incised teeth. Black oiled patina. Cracks of desiccation.

The Zimba, also called Binja, are close neighbors of the Lega in the Pangi and Shabunda region of DRC. Subject to Lega influence, they share some institutional similarities with the Lega and Luba. Whether they live in the forest or in the savannah, the symbolism of their art and rituals are associated with hunting which is of major importance. On the other hand, they are patrilineal groups that have ended up supplanting the matrilineal organization of their society. Like the Lega, the center of their system revolves around an institution similar to the Bwami, named bukota , mpunzu , or nsubi . Rare ape statuettes were also used in similar Bwami rites. (Lega culture: D.P. Biebuyck).
