In the south of Kuba country, at the confluence of the Kasai and Lulua rivers, live the Biombo, whose traditional masked ceremonies bear similarities to those of their neighbours, the Kuba.

The lower part of this biombo mask, hemispheric, suggests that this type of mask could have been carved primitively in a gourd. This chubby face, tightened in the middle zone, is associated with the different spirits of nature. The hairstyle worn by the Biombos is represented here by a single central growth, and it is in the form of lozenges that the biombo polychromy, with more often geometric patterns, is revealed on this rare copy.
The Biombo, a Subgroup Kuba, live at the intersection of the Lulua and Kasai rivers in R.D.C. The Kuba kingdom was founded in the 16th century by the Bushoong which are still ruled by a king today. It is the most prolific group in Western Kasai. In the south of the Kuba country, at the confluence of the Kasai and Lulua rivers, live the Biombo , whose traditional masked ceremonies have similarities to those of their neighbors.
