Dogon Box (N° 25373)

African object singular and refined, object of curiosity , this pot is based on a scorpion motif. Designed to collect medicinal preparations prepared according to the advice of elders who had been initiated into the science of trees or "jiridon", this container with a lid is surmounted by an animal figure. The walls are decorated with allegorical decorative motifs, such as friezes of wavelets and spiral motifs, and serpents. Irregular khaki brown patina.
The Dogon are a people renowned for their cosmogony, their esotericism, their myths and legends. Their population is estimated at around 300,000 souls living in the south-west of the Niger loop in the Mopti region of Mali (Bandiagara, Koro, Banka), near Douentza and part of northern Burkina (north-west of Ouahigouya ).The Dogon blacksmiths, forming an endogamous caste called irim, today produce weapons, tools, and also work with wood. "Masters of fire", they are also supposed to heal burns (Huib Blom).
