African art and the spectacular crest masks of the Igbo ethnic group. Rare helmet mask in dugout wood on which sits a figure of a couple, sitting back to back on a circular seat. The subjects offer the ichi scarifications of the Igbo. The man is holding a head, a reminder of the headhunting of yesteryear and a "metaphor for the exploit". This type of mask is used during ceremonies linked to the cult of the Owu water spirits, which are supposed to increase human fertility and agricultural productivity. Erosions, gaps, desiccation cracks. The Igbo live in the forest in southeastern Nigeria. They managed to combine a deep sense of individuality with an equally strong sense of belonging to the group. Their political system is complex and little known. The village is the most important social unit, the smallest being the extended family. The religion of the Igbo includes on the one hand the god Chuku , supreme creator, considered omnipotent, omniscient and omnipresent, and on the other hand the spirit of the earth Ala .
