Montol figure (N° 22580)

In an arched posture, this female figure rests on high "Z" legs, while the rounded bust projects the chest forward. A long neck bears a head notched with deep circular ears and topped with a crest. The powerful, straight nose accentuates the gravity of the face. The Goemai, Tarok (who call their healing society Kwompten), and the Ngas of central Nigeria make use of similar, often more schematic statues.

Velvety dark patina, cracks and abrasions.br> It was during healing rites, or even divination of the origins of illnesses, that this type of sculpture played a major role for members of male Komtin society. The Montols kept the sculptures for community use in the "dodos", thatched-roof huts decorated with skull-trophies, where they intervened in the cults following ritual libations.
