Baoule Box (N° 24256)

Intended for a practice still in use in the south-west of the Baoulé region, the object is composed of a lidded box against which a mediating tutelary figure leans, in meditation. The lid is streaked with lined patterns, and an openwork frieze adorns the base. A mouse (today absent....) considered to be a messenger of the deities of the asié earth, lived in the lower compartment of the object and the successive arrangement of the elements that it moved was read as an answer to the question posed to the diviner. Abraded black patina. Sold without mouse.

Ref.: Mathilde Buratti , “Boxes used for divination by mice”.
During the 18th century, united under a single banner, this Akan people was, according to legend, guided by Queen Aba Pokou to the gold mining region in eastern Côte d'Ivoire to s install there. The unity of the Baoulé declined following internal struggles as well as the gold rush since the arrival of the Europeans to lead in the end to a multitude of small disunited villages, directed by councils of elders.
