African Fanti art is distinguished by its fertility dolls worn by pregnant women, who must not lay eyes on a malformed being or object for fear of conceiving such a child. On the other hand, looking at these sculptures, expressions of idealized beauty, they are supposed to favor that of their future children. These dolls carved among the Fante, an Akan population of the coastal regions of Ghana, the former Gold Coast, form a different version of those of the Ashanti. Their function is however more or less similar. The head here adopts a rectangular shape. We find the ringed neck and the tubular bust with reduced breasts, here without arms, established on a circular base. This statuette whose head has on both sides geometric engravings associated with traditional scarifications. Black patina, desiccation crack.
